the Potawatomi call the St. Joseph River "senathwen zibé" or river with a rocky flow. prior to the construction of the dam, the river was 12 feet lower than it is today & was really rocky, & difficult to manouver. When coming across the river in the 1600s a French explorer Claude-Jean Allouez named the river the St. Joseph River because it happened to be the first day of the feast of St. Joseph in the Catholic Tradition.
